A crossroads of footpaths lie outside the front door. Wainwright’s ‘Pennine Journey’ long distance footpath has recently been opened and the path is literally outside the front door! The popular waterfall beauty spot of Cautley Spout is a gentle walk away, through the ancient and unspoilt woodland of Murthwaite Park, and it is great fun to walk to Ravenstonedale (about 3 miles away) to a choice of two homely pubs which serve great food and beer.
Another walk is to cross to the other side of the valley to Fell End Clouds – a notable area of limestone pavement, where you can pick up the Pennine Way if you fancy a longer day out. For more stalwart walkers, the area really is your oyster. And if you tire of the Yorkshire Dales and want further challenge, it’s an easy car journey to the heart of the Lake District, with all it has to offer.
